A positive ethos, culture of mutual respect, and a warm climate for learning have earned Crosshouse Primary in East Kilbride a glowing report from inspectors.

The school, which also has a nursery class and an additional support needs base, was inspected by the Education Scotland team in April.

During their visit, inspectors met with staff, pupils and families from across the community and highlighted a significant number of ‘very good’ factors in daily school life.

This included strong teaching, effective leadership and confident, motivated pupils. Both the school and nursery were rated very good for learning, teaching and assessment, as well as for raising attainment and securing children’s progress.

Other areas that were rated highly include:

  • The challenging learning experiences planned by teachers to provide children with opportunities to succeed and to do their best
  • A higher than local and national average attendance rate due to a commitment to identifying and supporting those who need it
  • The considerable opportunities for children to become effective contributors and responsible citizens, leading to awards in Financial Education, Children’s Rights and Sport
  • A clear and thoughtful strategy for reviewing and reducing the cost of the school day
  • The high levels of attainment in literacy and numeracy

The school’s nursery class was also visited and reviewed in April and received plaudits for its ‘high-quality and stimulating learning environment’ and ‘strong, warm and trusting relationships with children and families.’

Head Teacher Isabelle Murray and four pupils are pictured in a line standing outside the school holiding five gold-coloured, heart-shaped balloons.

Head Teacher, Isabelle Murray (pictured above), has led the school for more than ten years and is delighted that the hard work and commitment of staff and children have been recognised.

She added: I am incredibly proud of our children, staff and wider community following our very positive inspection. The report is well earned recognition of the dedication and hard work which I am privileged to witness daily.”

Councillor Gavin Keatt, Interim Chair of Education Resources Committee, also welcomed the report. He added: “This is a fantastic report for Crosshouse Primary, reflecting a school community to be proud of and a leadership team that understands and builds on the needs and abilities of each pupil.

"From early years through to P7, there is a consistent and positive approach to making school a place where pupils want to be, and creating an environment in which each can thrive.”
